The aim of the Yachtmaster Coastal practical course is to teach you the skills and techniques that will allow you to skipper a cruising yacht safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night.

The theory module is an advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. Some of the subjects covered in the shorebased Day Skipper course will be revised but the knowledge acquired through the Day Skipper course is the foundation of this advanced course.

RYA/SAS YACHTMASTER COASTAL / YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE PREP & EXAM

5 days Prep & 2 days Exam  -  R 5 600.00

This is not a course as such but a preparation for the Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore exam. We’ll go through all the relevant practical skills as well as preparing you for specific theoretical subjects that you might encounter during your exam to give you the chance to brush up on those particular topics and manoeuvres that you might not be confident with. The prep week covers the following aspects:

During the exam candidates are expected to demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical ability in the above listed areas while taking full responsibility for yacht and crew management under the range of different weather conditions. The successful completion of the exam leads to the award of Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.

The exam is conducted by an independent examiner, each students is examined during day and night sailing over a period of time regarding theoretical and practical abilities. The exam ends with a de-briefing of each candidate.

RYA/SAS YACHTMASTER OCEAN

6 days Theory  -  R 5 590.00 / Offshore Passage  -  R 1 200.00/day

The Yachtmaster Ocean is a course in astro-navigation and world-wide meteorology which also reveals to you the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a knowledge of all subjects covered in the previously shorebased courses.

To complete the Yachtmaster Ocean course we will take you on at least one offshore trip on which you will take sights as preparation for the oral exam thereafter. On this qualifying passage you need to act as skipper, mate or watch leader.

To cover the 600nm continuous offshore passage which is required for the Yachtmaster Ocean exam, and also for the purpose of taking the sights which need to be worked out in the exam we will head far offshore for this trip. For those who have already sufficient mileage logged this is reduced to a one day offshore trip for taking the sights.

3 WEEKS RYA YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE / SAS YACHTMASTER COASTAL

This is a fast track course for all those who have done either a Day Skipper or Yachtmaster Coastal Theory, and have gathered enough mileage to qualify for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam. Requirement for this course is that the theory (Day Skipper or Yachtmaster Coastal) has been done within the last year of the start of the course.

This course combination is also suitable for the SAS Yachtmaster Coastal: Anybody with enough experience and mileage to qualify for the SAS Coastal Skipper exam but with no formal qualification so far can choose this 3 weeks programme to get his SAS Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence.

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore / SAS Yachtmaster Coastal Prep & Exam  -  5 + 2 days
