Accreditation Explanation

What Accreditation do i need?
Picture

What do the different accreditation's enable me to do?

1) South African Sailing (SAS):
All SAS skippers’ tickets are purely recreational sailing and/or power tickets for South African Waters. This is not a commercial endorsement and you will not find work in the industry with SAS tickets alone.

2) International Certificate of Competence (ICC):
This is an endorsement that one may apply for if they hold a valid SAS or RYA skippers ticket. The ICC is recognized in the Med and many other international destinations. This endorsement allows you to charter and skipper a yacht for recreational purposes only. For more information on whether an ICC is accepted please speak to your charter booking agent in reference to the country you will be sailing. This is not a commercial endorsement and you will not find work in the industry with an ICC endorsement.

3) South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA)
SAMSA tickets are very similar to a SAS ticket, with one major difference; they cover both recreational and commercial tickets for South African waters only.
SAMSA do offer a wide range of certifications from >9m power boat options, all the way up to some of your top-level shipping tickets.
SAMSA do not do ‘sailing certifications’, this is what SAS is for. However if you require a commercial sailing or power ticket for South Africa and have a SAS skippers, then the conversion is relatively straight forward and usually just consists of an oral and navigation examination via a SAMSA examiner.

4) STCW2010:
This course is a legal requirement before working on any commercial vessel pretty much anywhere in the world. No STCW … no job! This qualification is required for your RYA ticket to be a commercial, however, it does not make a SAS or ICC ticket a commercial ticket.

5) Royal Yachting Association (RYA)
The RYA is also endorsed by the MCA making it the world’s most widely recognised commercial accreditation to hold.
RYA/MCA qualifications are what are needed to work in the international yachting industry.
RYA Courses are also able to be attained as purely recreational / cruising tickets.

Sail Due South is based in Saldanha (Langebaan), which is the only port in South Africa that holds full RYA accreditation.

I hope this sheds light on the situation. Don't get caught out! Sail Due South will be happy to give you honest, to our best knowledge, information on the industry.

Feel free to contact us if you have any other questions about accreditations, commercial endorsements and recreational sailing tickets.
